Republican Senator announces opposition to Scott Pruitt for EPA

One of the main reasons behind the opposition to Pruitt is that he filed multiple lawsuits against the EPA while serving as Attorney General of Oklahoma that argued the agency was guilty of federal overreach.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) announced she would vote "no" on the confirmation of EPA administrator-designate Scott Pruitt.

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats continue to try and fend off Pruitt's ascent while hedging around public statements on how they intend to vote.

". the Committee is concerned that these encrypted and off-the-record communication practices, if true, run afoul of federal record-keeping requirements, leaving information that could be responsive to future Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and congressional requests unattainable". "That does not mean that I agree with every regulatory action that EPA has taken".

The U.S. Senate should move swiftly this week to confirm Scott Pruitt as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and put in charge an effective leader who will usher in an era of responsible natural resource stewardship while also taking into account the human costs and benefits of environmental regulation.

With ties to fossil fuel proponents and major industrial companies, Pruitt's ability to potentially advocate for clean energy and environmental safety standards in his capacity as head of the EPA is being called into question. "A strong commitment to protecting the health of our nation's environment is critical for protecting Maine's natural beauty, the state's economy, and the health of those of us fortunate enough to call ME home".

This comes on the heels of her state counterpart, Independent Senator Angus King, making a similar declaration last month, owing to his belief that Pruitt "just doesn't believe in the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency". "Pollution from beyond our borders threatens our health, yet Scott Pruitt has been a champion for the polluting industries that send that pollution to ME". She said she might support Pruitt if he'd been nominated to another post.

"He's exceptionally qualified. He's dedicated to environmental protection", McConnell said.

"Missourians depend on the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act to have safe air to breathe and safe water to drink", he states. Collins to know that we have her back on this issue.

"We think that's the point", Whitehouse said.

"Of the remaining nominees, Scott Pruitt should be next on the challenge list". The Senate must stand with science.
